Flight 2

EW9781 Vienna Dusseldorf

Airbus A340-300 OO-SCW 11K/02K

Flight 2 was the reason why I flew to Vienna out of Brussels, to fly the Eurowings Airbus A340-300 operated by Brussels Airlines. When I arrived in Vienna I went to the check in desk to be checked in and picking up my boarding pass. In Vienna Eurowings operates from terminal 1 gate C. That’s something to keep in mind if connecting from a star alliance carrier as they arrive in terminal 1 but at the G and F gates. The load on this flight was more than ok as Eurowings is using their A340 to Vienna and Palma de Mallorca as part of the training/qualification flights. Previously SunExpress was responsible for the long haul flights on the Airbus A330-300 but now they’ve added the A340-300. On this flight there were more or less 62 passengers booked and thus I got seat 02K. They still have the old Lufthansa cabin but it looks clean and fresh. Once they’ll start the long haul operations they’ll add some more branding but for now it’s important to train and qualify their staff. As this was one of the training flights there were a lot of cabin crew + additional cabin crew from Brussels Airlines (they’re wearing a different uniform). In general the plane is in Eurowings colors but a really small sticker on the door tells you it’s operated by Brussels Airlines which is also mentioned on the safety card. In the cabin they have 3 classes, Bizclas, Best and Basic/Smart. I was lucky to be seated in Bizclass which are the latest Lufthansa seats which are pretty comfortable, they even have the Bose headsets installed.

The flight left on time for a 1hr20 flight to Dusseldorf, after take off the standard Eurowings short haul product was offered as for them this was just a short haul flight on a wide body aircraft. In Bizclass you get to choose whatever you like from the menu while in Best you get a sandwich and a dessert while in smart and basic you can buy something from the inflight menu. The crew were very nice, and in general most of them come from Air Berlin and are more than happy to be in the air again. You can tell they’re motivated and excited to fly the plane on long haul destinations as they’re walking around with pride and excitement. After 1hr20 an on time arrival in Dusseldorf and time to get some sleep before flight number 3 would take place.

Flight 3

EW9574 Dusseldorf Palma De Mallorca

Airbus A340-300 OO-SCW 45K

On this sunny day it was time to get to the airport again to board the plane that I flew the night before from Vienna. Once arrived at the gate there was some confusion as we had to go one level down to wait at the exact same boarding area. Boarding started on time but this time the load was a little bit higher. Approximately 100 passengers booked to Palma. A new day a new training flight, on this flight there were no more than 18 Eurowings flight attendants and again 3 flight attendants from Brussels Airlines there to qualify them. A new group of highly motivated cabin crew greeted the passengers when boarding the airplane and all excited to hit the skies with this A340. During boarding they all wear the blue hat and blue gloves (apart from the men who have a grey uniform). On this flight I got seat 45K which was all the way in the back but more than ok as I had a magnificent wing view. Once again an on time departure for a 2hrs flight to the sunny island of Palma.

After a bumpy start the crew started their service, again according to your class you got something or you had to buy something from their Wings Bistro. Today I was seated in 45K which is basic so I had to buy something from the bistro. They don’t offer a lot of items but the items offered are good quality and a correct price. As it’s a training flight the crew were being trained by the Brussels Airlines flight attendants throughout the flight meaning sometimes you would see them going to a toilet or compartment to review equipment. What’s remarkable on Eurowings flights is that they have a lot of female crew, on all their publicity they show female crew which is similar to the Virgin Atlantic marketing. The crew was always present throughout the flight and there to help you with anything you would need or to chat. In the economy cabin they have a standard layout of 2-4-2 seats where as from row 42 it goes to 2-3-2 as the plane get’s narrow near the end. Seats are the same as you would find on Lufthansa planes (as it’s an ex Lufthansa plane) and have a private tv screen with a USB port to charge your device. Furthermore they have a small ‘BEST’ cabin which as the economy plus seats and a Bizclass cabin which has business class seats, all from LH. The pitch in economy is generous especially for longer flights.
